About:
Dr. Michael D. Milligan is a highly skilled sports medicine physician known for his comprehensive treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries, including joint pain, arthritis, muscle sprains, overuse injuries, traumatic injuries, and sports-related concussions. His expertise extends to the treatment of athletes across all age groups and skill levels, with a special focus on spine conditions, athlete cardiovascular health, and pre-surgical health optimization. At HSS Florida, as Program Director, Dr. Milligan has led significant sports medicine programs and community outreach efforts. His past roles include Medical Director of Nonsurgical Sports Medicine at the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, where he also managed sports medicine outreach, serving numerous high schools, colleges, and local events. He has pioneered programs in sports concussion, surgical pre-optimization, and cost-reduction initiatives in orthopedic care. Before his tenure at the Andrews Institute, Dr. Milligan served Northwestern University as Head Team Physician and Director of Intercollegiate Sports Medicine, where he developed an integrated sports medicine service catering not only to Division I athletes but also to club, intramural participants, and the wider student body. His efforts led to the accreditation of Northwestern's athletic sports medicine services. Dr. Milligan's fellowship in sports medicine was completed at the University of Nevada School of Medicine, where he provided care to Division I student-athletes and later became Head Team Physician for UNLV Athletics. His educational background includes an honors degree from Presbyterian College and a medical degree from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, where he was a Brody Scholar. Early in his career, Dr. Milligan engaged in community sports medicine, serving as a sideline physician for local sporting events. Outside his professional achievements, Dr. Milligan is passionate about cycling and ultrarunning, having completed significant endurance challenges, including cycling across the United States. He also contributes to his community, having served on the board of the Children’s Home Society and as president of the Florida Alliance for Sports Medicine.
